Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsAdvertising can put your law firm in front of a person at the moment they need help, which is its appeal and its risk. A law firm that advertises before its website, listing and intake are ready pays for visits that go nowhere. A law firm that advertises every practice area at once spreads a small budget too thin. This overview explains how a law firm should think about Google Ads, Local Services Ads, Bing, Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) and ChatGPT ads, how to sequence them and where the advertising rules of your bar and the platforms' own policies set limits.
We manage the accounts for a flat monthly fee. Ad spend goes straight to the platform, and we do not buy or sell leads. We cannot promise a number of calls or cases.
The channels
Intent at the moment of need
Text ads against searches such as an attorney for a specific matter. The main channel for many law firms. Google Ads for law firms.
Verified-provider listings
Google offers this format for some legal categories in some markets. Availability, verification and pricing mechanics change, so check what Google currently offers for lawyers in your area before planning around it.
A smaller, steady audience
Similar search ads with less competition in many markets, often reaching older desktop users. Worth adding once Google is working.
Awareness and retargeting
Better for planning-type matters, events and reaching people who already visited your site than for someone in a sudden crisis. Meta Ads for law firms.
An early channel
A small, measured test at most, and only after your attorneys confirm the platform's policies and your bar rules allow it for legal services.
Choosing an order
| Type of matter | How clients decide | Sensible first channel | Add later |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urgent and time-sensitive | Within hours, by phone | Google Ads search with call handling in place | Local Services Ads where available, Bing |
| Considered personal planning | Over weeks, comparing several law firms | Organic pages first, then search ads on specific topics | Meta retargeting of site visitors |
| Business clients | Referral first, search second | Local search and a strong profile, then narrow search ads | Meta Ads for events and webinars |
| Community-oriented practices | Trust, language and word of mouth | Google Ads in the languages you serve | Meta Ads with community-specific creative |
| Referral-driven practices | Another professional recommends | Organic and reputation work | Limited paid use, if any |
If your law firm handles several of these, advertise the area with the clearest value and the most capacity first.
What each channel asks of you
| Channel | What the law firm must supply | What breaks if it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads search | A matching landing page, someone to answer calls and a way to log outcomes | Clicks arrive and nothing captures them |
| Local Services Ads | Verification documents, a responsive phone line and timely handling of each lead | Profile access can be limited and leads go cold |
| Bing and Microsoft | The same pages and tracking as Google, plus patience with a smaller audience | A duplicate account that nobody reviews |
| Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) | Attorney-reviewed creative, a monitored page and a privacy-aware tracking setup | Comments and messages that go unanswered or leak confidences |
| ChatGPT ads | A very small test budget, attorney approval of the platform terms and clear measurement | Spend with no way to tell whether any consultation resulted |
Capacity
An advertising plan is also a staffing plan. If the lawyers are fully booked for the next three weeks, a surge of consultation requests will only create a waiting list, and a person with an urgent problem will not wait. Before turning ads up, count how many new consultations the law firm can hold in a week, who attends them and how quickly an engagement letter can follow. If the honest answer is "very few," the better investment may be intake or a second attorney, not more clicks.
The reverse is also true. A law firm with open calendar time, a clear practice focus and a strong website often gets more from a small, well-targeted test than from broad spending. We would rather help you start with a bounded budget, learn which searches and messages bring suitable consultations and scale carefully than commit you to a large number on day one. Paid ads also differ from organic work in one important way: they stop the day the budget stops, which is why we pair them with the foundations described in the complete marketing guide.
Finally, think about the kind of client each channel brings. Search ads reach someone who has already named a problem. Social ads often reach someone who has not. Neither is better in the abstract; each suits different matters, and your calendar and fee structure decide how much of each makes sense.
Rules in two layers
Two sets of rules govern an ad. Your state bar's rules decide what a lawyer may say: disclaimers, descriptions of experience, references to results, specialties, testimonials and sometimes how an ad must be labeled or filed. Each platform also has its own policies about what an ad can contain and how people can be targeted. Meta, for example, does not allow ads that assume something about the viewer's personal circumstances, which affects wording like "Are you facing a lawsuit?"
We handle the platform side and check copy for obvious bar issues, but the responsible attorney decides whether an ad complies, since bar rules differ and change. If your state requires submission, a label or a retention period for ads, we build that into the process. A few things are off the table everywhere in our work: promises about outcomes, superlatives such as best or top and any suggestion of certification the lawyer does not hold. This is general information and not legal advice.
Order of operations
Who answers the phone, what happens after hours and how fast a form inquiry gets a reply? Ads magnify whatever intake already does.
Pick the area where your fees, capacity and expertise line up, and build a dedicated landing page.
Count calls, forms and scheduled consultations without sending client details to ad platforms.
A bounded budget for a few weeks with clear questions: which searches bring suitable calls, and which do not.
Block unsuitable searches, improve the page, then add another practice area or channel.
Management fees
Questions for yourself
Your own number
Use the average fee for the practice area you plan to advertise, and keep contingent and flat-fee matters separate because they pay out on different timelines.
Capacity
Count open slots across all attorneys for a typical week, not the best week.
Your conversion
If you do not know, track it for a month first. A guess makes every later number unreliable.
Scope
Calls you cannot take still cost money. Write the list so ads and pages can screen them out.
Accountability
Name one attorney who signs off on ads and landing pages, and keep a record of what was approved.
Questions
Managing one platform is $895 a month, two is $1,595 and three is $2,295, with nothing due at the start and no contract. The advertising budget is a different number, paid to the platform and chosen by you according to your fees and how many consultations you can handle.
The one where a signed matter is worth the most to the law firm, you have capacity to take on more and a clear landing page can be built. Starting with the busiest or most competitive area is not always the best use of a first budget.
Google has offered them for some legal categories, but availability and rules differ by area and have changed over time. Check Google's current program for lawyers in your market, then compare it with search ads before choosing.
Many bars restrict this heavily, and rules vary. We do not write outcome claims. If you want to mention an award or credential, your attorney should check the bar's current guidance on how it may be described.
Treat it as an early channel and test small, if at all. Confirm that the platform's policies and your bar rules allow legal advertising there, and measure real consultations before spending more.
No. Ads switch off when the budget stops, while organic pages and listings keep working. Most law firms use both, with ads covering high-value matters and organic work building a base.
